We are the ghetto kids
The kids, who’s so called future
Look “scaring”,
The ones you call “uncivilized”,
The ones you “reject” to be apart of them,
The ones you are “ashamed” of.
We are the ghetto kids,
The “forgotten” youth,
The ones you can see their “misery”
But you still making your
“Illegal” merchandise available to them,
Even though you know you” killing” them,
But you still.
We are the ghetto,
The ones you have “named”,
The architecture of the art,
So called “crime”
We are the ghetto kids
The ones, who you have said,
Adopted the “Black labor”
As their best friends,
The ones who are “dying”
Under a pool table
Inside the ghetto night clubs
So called “shebeens”
We are the ghetto kids
The ones that have been
“Neglected” by their own parents,
The ones who their parents,
You have named them “unfitted parents”,
The ones who their tears never stop running,
The ones you have said,
They have brake the record of “high school drop out”
The ones who are struggling to find “acceptance”
In society, because of where they come from.
We are the ghetto kids
We are the ones, why there must be,
A community development,
politicaly, economically and socialy,
So do not forget about us,
The kids, who’s so called future
Look “scaring”,
The ones you call “uncivilized”,
The ones you “reject” to be apart of them,
The ones you are “ashamed” of.
We are the ghetto kids,
The “forgotten” youth,

Sebastio,
ReplyDeleteThese last few poems are profound, and poignant. But they need clarity and poise.
You ask me about publishing a book. I have two suggestions.
First, always re-write what you have written. William Faulkner once said "All first drafts are shit." I agree with him. I've published a dozen or more articles and one book. Every one of them was written, re-written, edited, proofread, re-written, etc. I never let a first draft go without a very detailed word-by-word analysis of it. Young writers always want to just "speak from the heart." But your heart must be able to stand up under your own careful critique.
Second, start not by publishing a book but by publishing individual poems in whatever journal you can convince to publish them. Publish ANYWHERE! Then, after you have published twenty or so, you will have some credentials to send with a submission to the big journals. Publish in them. Then you will gain the credentials to present to publishers of books. I published many articles and book reviews before I was able to publish a book. My first book found no publisher so I took it apart chapter by chapter and had each chapter published individually as articles. That helped set the stage to later present a solid background to an excellent publisher to have a later book published.
It is not easy, it is not quick. All that is great in life takes work and perseverance.
You have some intense thoughts, some intense feelings. But that is not enough to be a great poet. You also need to develop your ear and to learn to re-work your own work. You have to become self-critical.
You can do it, I can tell. But it will not come overnight.
In the meantime, I hope to continue seeing your work on your site here!
Your friend,
Doug
